~~~ Skyla’s Winter Survival ~~~
Working Title
Imagine a world that is cold.
Everything is covered in snow and ice. You’ve been tossed out into it with just your skills and your clothes. Not even a knife to your name. How will you survive? Will you take a chance at eating the strange mushrooms that are around, or will you thrive and take back the city from the humans that no longer want you around any more?
The nights are long. It’s hard to see. Blizzards can take you by surprise, and if you’re not careful, you will freeze.
Setup: Skyla is run out of a city by the guards. It's the middle of winter and she's cold. She doesn't have anything that she needs to survive, and needs to get it very quickly because even though she’s resistant to the cold there is too much to do
Setting: Winter Forest. Sparse supplies, a wasted forest, and a lone, exiled woman that is out of place in the world.
Goal: Survive, Thrive, and take over the City yourself.
Systems:
- [Numbers are assumed to be in base 12]
= Game Loop =
- The game revolves around eeking out a means of survival and trying to move behind it
- The player will initially have to deal with the varied problems of survival: Food, water, warmth, sleep, and safety. Only after settling on these problems can the player move on. This will be a constant problem.
- As the player gathers enough food and creates their initial base, they can make other places to improve their station in life
= Tech Tree =
- [The five C's of survival are Cutting, Combustion, Cordage, Cover, and Container]
- This tech tree won't be very large. It's limited to the primitive items that Skyla needs to make headway into the city.
- Cutting: Claws, Sharp Rock -> Rock Knife -> Copper Knife
- Cordage: Roots, Bark, Sinew
- Combustion: Friction fire -> Slime Spark -> Oil Flask
- Cover: Tree / Cave -> Lean To -> Mossy Log Cabin
- Container: Gourds? Birch bark -> Clay vessel, leather skin
- Clothes: Hide and Fur -> Leather -> Battle Cloak
- Weapons: Not exactly tech tree dependent
-- Knives can be affixed to sticks to make a spear. Skyla can throw them
-- Knives can similarly be affixed to a stick to make an axe. She uses this for chopping.
- Traps: Pit -> Snare -> Falling Log -> Snapping Trap
= HUD stats =
Health
- Healthbar + Maximum Health, combined system.
- Initial Amount: 100 Health, 100 Max Health.
- Max health can be reduced over time.
- After health hits 0, maximum health is decreased instead. The player only dies if their maximum health hits 0.
- Initial Amount: 100 Health, 100 Max Health.
- Health will regenerate over time, but very slowly. Injuries are meant to be meaningful and long lasting.
- Maximum health will NOT regenerate over time.
Stamina
- Slow burn. Stamina is spent slowly and regenerates slowly.
- Doubles as a hunger meter. Maximum stamina drops over time as the player gets hungrier.
- Initial Amount: 100 Stamina, 100 Max Stamina.
Warmth
- Skyla is relatively unbothered by cold.
- Internal temperature is kept track of and adjusts slowly over time, like stamina.
- Staying warm provides bonuses rather than punishments.
- Hunger rate reduces when warmer, up to a maximum of 50%
- Extreme conditions, such as blizzard or swimming in frigid water, can cause hypothermia.
= Inventory =
Food/Medicine
- Food lowers hunger, medicine restores health.
- Basic items may be consumed for both effects. Advanced items are better at one or the other.
Tools
- All tools need to be fashioned.
- Cordage required for many items - made from grass if you can get it, bark and sinew if you can't.
- Knife required to make many items.
- Traps required for hunting efficiently.
- Fishing Rod required for ice fishing, as well as a way to crack the ice.
Equipment
- Clothing can increase warmth and keeps it from going down as fast.
- Wet equipment reduces warmth instead of increasing it.
Crafting
- Crafting is done out in the world at any given point
- Combining different items results in more complicated items
- Advanced crafting requires workstations - and tools
= Environment =
Day/Night
- Lasts 36 minutes
- Nights are long, days are short (20, 16)
- Sunlight warms local area, and day generally warms the entire environment
Terrain
- Trees function as platforms.
- Various hills and rocks can be stood on.
- Terrain should appear relatively functional. No floating platforms?
Weather
- Only sunny for the first few days
- Light snow obscures the sun, removing any semblance of warmth
- A blizzard will be present for at least one day. The player will have to deal with that somehow
= Base Setup, Camping =
Fire
- Fire increases warmth in an area
Cooking
- Basic cooking can be had with a rock next to the fire.
- Spit roasting is just as easy. All one needs is a stick.
- Pot cooking requires a clay vessel to put ingredients into.
- Pan cooking will require a large copper bowl over the fire.
- ~Chestnuts roasting on an open fire~
Crafting
- Many things will need both a source of cordage and a workspace such as a stone anvil
- The higher quality that the workstation is, the higher quality of items will be produced. The reason for this will be obvious, such as an uneven rock vs a smooth copper table.
Shelter
- Shelter protects from the elements. The main things to worry about are warmth and snow, but the occasional freezing rain will be devastating to be caught out in
= Hunting =
Tracking
- Animal tracks, droppings, etc
- The markings should be visible to both Skyla and the player
Trapping
- Specific areas should be noted as being more likely to find
Creatures
- Small game, such as squirrels and rabbits. Easy to catch
- Flying game, such as ducks, quail, and crows. Hard to catch, little meat, required for making arrows.
- Large game, such as deer.
- Dangerous game, bears. Large sources of meat and claws and fur and other parts. High risk vs high reward
Prep
- A lot of animals have a lot of useful parts. Each one will have to be cleaned and taken apart, cooked, or otherwise prepared in a reasonable fashion
- Skyla will be impatient and work quickly no matter what kind of tool she has
= Foraging =
Mushrooms
- Easiest way to gain food
- Shelf mushrooms are generally food
- Other mushrooms can be crafted into medicine or toxin
Bark
- Useful for various things, including braided cordage, bowls,
Wood
- Living trees are bad for burning, good for crafting
- Dead wood is good for burning
- Fallen trees are most useful for dead wood
= Other systems =
Ice Fishing
- Is this a minigame?
